Chapter 4: Algebra... Which is larger in magnitude?

Similar but Different
The two 5s below affect the expressions differently. One known as coefficient while the other is known as a constant. Which is which?

(a) Which is larger in magnitude (size)?

5 + n or  5n


(b) Explain your answer clearly with examples.

    (b) let n be 2. 5+2=7 while 5X2=10 10 is bigger than 7 so 5n is bigger

  2. It depends on what n is. If n is 2 or higher*, 5n is bigger like: Let n be 6. 5+6=11 but 5X6=30. However, if n is 1 or lower*, 5+n is bigger like: Let n be 0. 5+0=5 but 5X0=0.

    *higher/lower includes fractions too

  3. 5n will always be larger in magnitude, unless n is equal to/less than 1.

    When 5n is larger than 5+n: (let n be 2)
    5Xn=5X2=10
    5+n=5+2=7
    When 5n is smaller than 5+n: (let n be 1)
    5Xn=5X1=5
    5+n=5+1=6

    it is because n will be greater than n+5 when it is multiplied by 5.
    for example: n= 2
    so 5n = 5x2 = 10
    5+n = 5+2= 7
    Clearly 10 is bigger than 7!
